What type of cardiovascular exercise should I do in the gym?

Recent research at the University of Nebrask at Kearney has found that at equivalent perceived exertions, there is not a significant difference between the use of the treadmill and the elliptical trainer in terms of energy expenditure and oxygen consumption.  In fact, the elliptical trainer actually increased heart rate more than the treadmill.  So if your knees have kept you from the treadmill, you no longer need to concern yourself with missing out on an efficient and effective cardiovascular training session if you use the elliptical trainer instead.
